Future impact

The Future

Air travel will definitely increase in the future & Perth Airport will become busier causing more & more aircraft to fly over the Perth Hills area.

There is already work being carried out to extend terminals & it is planned to eventually combine the Domestic Terminal with the International Terminal with maybe even a rail link to the City.

There are future plans to extend Runway 06 / 24 so that larger aircraft can use it - this runway is used by aircraft that overfly Parkerville, Stoneville, Mt. Helena & Chidlow after take off.

There are also plans to build another runway parallel to Runway 03 / 21 – this runway is used by landing aircraft that overfly Glen Forrest, Paulls Valley, Hacketts Gully, Bickley, Carmel & Roleystone. This will obviously have the potential to double the amount of aircraft using this approach route.

The number of aircraft movements planned for Perth Airport in the future is 350,000 per year, that is one aircraft movement every 1 ½  minutes over a 24 hour period, 365 days a year.

If there are problems now with noise & real estate values imagine what they will be like in a few years time if the above happens.

Curfew unlikely

There is no curfew applied to Perth Airport. Flights are allowed 24 hours a day.

The reason given for Perth not having a curfew is that Perth is not a large city and it is so isolated that it must fit into the schedules of the other larger cities which have curfews in place.

Real Estate reality

There are various estimates of how much a Property will be devalued if an aircraft flight path is put over it. They vary from 10% to 30%; the one constant is that the Property will be devalued.

Using Glen Forrest as an example, where the median price of a property is around $480,000, & if the lower estimate of 10% is used then the loss would be $48,000 per property.

There are over 1,000 dwellings in Glen Forrest so a total loss for the suburb would be in the region of $50 million. $100 million if the devaluation is 20%.

Roleystone is about the same value but with nearly 2,000 dwellings. From Hovea east to Chidlow there are over 3000 dwellings.

Irrespective of whose fault it was that people were not given the opportunity to comment on these new flight paths, it will be a huge loss that the community in general will suffer if they are not moved.
